Agates in general
Agate is the name given to numerous varieties of banded Chalcedony, a mineral of the Quartz family. Its name comes from the Achetes River in Sicily, where Agates were first found. Usually banded in layers, or stripes, some varieties have “eye” markings, or specks of colour, some have fossilized inclusions, and others are solid. Called the earth rainbow, the concentric bands of Agate form in nearly every colour the earth can produce, including a colourless form.
Historically, Agate has been discovered with the artifacts of Neolithic people, and was used as healing amulets and ornamentation dating back to Babylon. Its medicinal uses continued through the ancient Greek and Egyptian civilizations, and spread throughout Africa and the Middle East into Russia.
Metaphysically, Agate has a lower intensity and vibrates to a slower frequency than other stones, but is highly regarded as a stabilizing and strengthening influence. The layered bands of microscopic quartz in Agate may appear delicate, but they are actually very strong. Agate is excellent for balancing emotional, physical and intellectual energy, and in harmonizing yin & yang, the positive & negative forces of the universe.
The world of Agates is a fascinating and ever evolving place. There are hundreds, if not thousands of types of agates, and they are found all around the world. They bring a wonder and magic to the planet with their swirls of colour bands.
All agates promote inner stability, composure, and maturity. Their warm, protective properties encourage security and self-confidence. Agates are a great crystal to use during pregnancy. Agates also help new mothers avoid the “baby blues” sometimes experienced after giving birth, and an Agate jewel worn between the breasts encourages lactation. Their protective properties also make them useful protection amulets when traveling, and they are said to prevent accidents.
Agate stops the burning desires, both for things we do not need and for others, which is why it’s e.g. often regarded as a stone that promotes marital fidelity. It assists those juggling commitments or multiple jobs; it helps writers express ideas in marketable form; and it helps young children learn to walk and not fall as they get older.
Agate is beneficial in self-analysis and uncovering hidden circumstances that might interfere with well-being. It promotes self-acceptance and confidence, encouraging the speaking of one’s own truth. Agate overcomes negativity and bitterness of the heart, by healing anger, fostering love, and lending the courage to start over. It is useful for any kind of trauma.
Agate enhances mental function by improving concentration, perception, and analytical abilities. Agate encourages a sense of reality and pragmatic thinking. Agates with regular designs soothe those who desire peace and harmony, while those with irregular designs can stimulate action and important decision making.
Physical health-wise, all agates share various characteristics: Placed on the abdomen, Agates stimulate the digestive system and relieve gastritis. They are also beneficial for the eyes, for the hollow organs (such as the stomach, uterus, intestines, bladder, etc.), and they help heal skin disorders and itching due to insect bites. Agates are also helpful to the heart and blood vessels. Wearing an Agate in the middle of the chest strengthens the cardiac muscle, and heals emotional disharmony that prevents acceptance of love. A cold Agate placed on the forehead is generally effective in curing fever. (If the fever returns, however, consult a doctor.) Agate may also reduce the symptoms of epilepsy, and for some people guards against sleepwalking.
Agate stabilizes the aura, eliminating and transforming negative energies. Its cleansing effect is powerful at all levels.
Agate raises awareness and links into the collective consciousness of the Oneness of life. It encourages quiet contemplation of one’s life experiences that lead to spiritual growth and inner stability. Agates provide a wide variety of crystal formations conducive for meditation focus. The intricate movements within the crystal encourage a calm, relaxing state and open the mind to higher thought and inner truths.
Botswana Agate in particular
Botswana Agate encourages treating the underlying causes of illness rather than the symptoms. It may be used to treat depression and stress and is used during grieving processes – it is often referred to as a ‘comfort stone’. It is beneficial in ridding the body of toxins and is believed to be good for the skin. It helps stimulate the immune and nervous systems, and aids in brain oxygen assimilation for a healthy circulatory system.
Botswana Agate helps alleviate obsessive thoughts and destructive mental patterns, and assists in overcoming fears, such as agoraphobia and panic attacks in crowded places. It encourages one to view the bigger picture in life, and look toward practical solutions rather than dwelling on the reasons for a situation or assigning blame.
A crystal of possibility and hope, Botswana Agate encourages artistic expression and exploration of the unknown, while still maintaining logic and attention to detail that brings projects and ventures into reality. It also releases emotional repression and blocks to fertility, by lending the knowledge that sexuality is a natural function and sensuality is the body’s appreciation of the fullness of life. Hence its use in relieving sexual dysfunctions (in both sexes).
Botswana Agate, with its energies of pale red, grey and brown, stimulates the Base or Root Chakra. This chakra is located at the base of the spine, and controls the energy for kinesthetic feeling and movement. It is the foundation of physical and spiritual energy for the body. When physically out of balance the symptoms will manifest themselves as lethargy, low levels of activity, low enthusiasm, and a need for constant stimulation. When its spiritual energies are out of balance, you will feel flighty, disconnected from reality, and distant. When the Base Chakra is in balance, the physical body regains its strength and stamina, and the spiritual energy is rekindled in the form of security and sense of one’s own power. It often leads to independence and spontaneous leadership.
Botswana Agate exudes soft pink colour energy — the rays of determination, commitment, and caring. Its soothing colours calm feelings of anger or resentment, and can aid efforts to meditate and reflect. Pink is the colour of new love, new romance and new relationships. It increases developing sensuality, and can help overcome heartache, aiding in the improvement of our caring and loving abilities. Its silver layers, secondly, embody the silver ray of reflection and the path to inner consciousness. Much like pure white, lighter grey is the colour of the moon, the feminine, the cool stillness of night, magic and ambiguity. It is lonely, altruistic, and aloof. As Seekers, grey objects find patterns and the inner meanings of events. Use light grey or silver talismans for quiet meditation, finding purpose in life, and for calm reflection on life’s meanings. Lastly, the brown and apricot shades in Botswana Agates reflect the rich, brown rays of the natural earth. It is the colour influence of home, hearth, and nature, of comfort and connection. It lets you relax, reconnect, and regain your composure. It is grounding. Brown crystals promote security and stability.
Botswana Agate is extremely effective for multi-dimensional healing and soul-work. The bands across its surface allow for traveling into another reality, different streams of consciousness or accessing other lives.
Botswana Agate is also used for grounding and centering in the beginning of meditation rituals. The crystal allows for harmony with nature and in easing into a transition state. Use a Botswana Agate for the first few minutes of any meditation, then switch to a crystal attuned to the intent of the session.
The Divinatory meaning of Botswana Agate could be summarised as follows: You may have to look for an opportunity or solution, but it has been there all the time, hidden by looking too far away and missing the obvious.
